Debate workshop at swinburne.
Okiez, basic introduction: Swinburne [Or Swin-Bur-Ne as the sign calls it] organized a debate workshop yesterday for people in high school. Basically, it covered all students from form 1 to form 6, so me & joash got to go!!! HAHAHAZ. Together with us was Rav, Vanessa & Lynda, who were all from form 6 Also.
So anyways first things first: Swinburne's campus is damn COLD! I don't mean the basic ooh~ its so nice & cooling kind off cold. I'm saying the OH-MY-GOD-FREEZE-MY-ASS-OFF
I'M-GONNA-CRY-&-MY-TEARS-ARE-GONNA-FREEZE kind off super duper extreme cold. this was kinda unfair coz all the people there were wearing jackets & sweaters & what not, & we were stuck in our thin as silk & not-even-as-warm-as-silk school uniforms. We were shivering... & not from excitement.
Anyways... back to topic at hand here.... Debate workshop!!! So we went with Our MUET teacher, Pn. Jenifer Kong [p.j.k. heehee] brought us there to participate in this activity, conducted by Singapore-based Mr Loke Wing Fatt, from the Society for Associated Inter-Tertiary Debaters, along with his colleagues Ms Cheong En Min, Mr Hewlens Wong & Ms Cheong En Min [who had flaming red hair & a nice smile, even with braces on. *hint to a certain someone*.
The workshop started at 2, meaning me & Joash had to rush home, bathe, Change into our school uniform (again... although i must add they were fresh... if not what would have been the point?), grab our stuff, drive out, eat sushi, drive there, find a place to park, & walk straight in.... with a full 10 minutes to spare. hehe.
The workshop itself was quite good, we heard the basic introduction given by Mr. Loke himself, than we watched a mock debate presented by the two teams that were present, consisting of people of the swinburne debate team. They spoke quite fast & one or 2 appeared nervous even. My personal favorite was an indian guy [forgot his name] which the opponents labelled a "hairy bumbling clown". Damn them. That was mean.
Moving on, we were split up into groups of 3 randomly. I was put into a group with a rather seasoned debator, Mathew from Stampin, & Bong Yi Ping, an [so she says] inexperienced debator from Lodge Secondary (who was quite cute btw, heehee... her, not the school lar.). We were thrust with this topic: "The House should expell School bullies."
We went up against a team consisting of a member of the Swinburne team; A bumi girl from Samariang: & surprise, surprise, Elztan!!! My previous school's apprentice [well me n joash lar, but what does that have to do with the price of fish?]
OK, surprisingly, the lodgian girl did Very well. She impressed us all, even the judge, who couldn't believe himself when we told him she was a virgin... at debating lar, what! We lost though, coz according to the judge, we "didn't structurise our team properly". Bummer.Nvm though, we had loads... nay... TONNES of fun, although i'm still bummed we lost. The spirit of a real debator never quits though. Heehee.
No regrets though, it was just a training session. Can't wait for the REAL competition to start... BRING IT ON HIGHIANS!!! MY LOYALTY HAS SHIFTED!!! =p
